Stratiotes' Unconventional Warfare

Reading Recommendations in Unconventional Warfare

These are my personal favorites and not necessarily the books that others might recommend. I would like hear your suggestions for reading but will only comment on books I have read myself on these pages. I have also attempted of late to review new books as I read them but it has been difficult to backfill the ones I have read before. With time, I hope to catch up. The comments on this page will be a brief synopsis, for more information as I review them, see the book reviews page.

Introduction to UWGuerrilla Warfare Classics4th Generation Warfare (4GW)
  • War in the Shadows: The Guerrilla in History, Robert Asprey's brilliant and thorough treatment of guerrilla warfare history from ancient times through the present. Originally written for a better understanding of the Vietnam conflict in the later 1970's, later editions contain even more chapters of guerrilla history since Vietnam. This two-volume coverage may be a bit too much if you are only interested in an introduction but you could easily pick and choose a few chapters that catch your interest.
  • Chasing Ghosts: Unconventional Warfare in American History, In this work, John Tierney makes note of Asprey's great work and suggests this as perhaps a primer for the reader interested soley in American historical context. The coverage is good but not to Asprey's standards. Still, it is quite good a a great new addition to the field.
